“I leave you peace, my peace I give you; I do not give it to you as the world gives. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
— John 14:27
There are days when we wake up tired even before we start.
It’s not the body, it’s the soul.
An unease that we can’t quite explain. Everything seems in place, but inside, we feel that something is not at rest.
It was on one of those days that this word from Jesus reaches us in a different way: “I do not give you peace as the world gives”. Because, honestly, we expect exactly that peace from the world. The peace that depends on everything being resolved. The peace that only comes when the problem ends, when the fear passes, when the answer arrives.
But the peace of Christ doesn’t work that way.
It doesn’t come after the storm.
The peace of Christ comes right in the middle of it.

Jesus says these words at the Last Supper. It’s not a beautiful speech on a calm day. It’s the eve of the cross. The disciples are confused, afraid, not quite understanding what is to come. And yet, He offers His Peace. He doesn’t offer an explanation. He doesn’t offer a shortcut. He offered Peace. Think a little about this, how do you feel receiving the Peace He offered us?
Saint Augustine said that the human heart remains restless until it rests in God. This unease we feel, often, is not a lack of control. It’s thirst. Thirst for a deeper rest that no external organization can give us.
In the tradition of the Church, this peace has always been understood as a fruit of trust, not the absence of pain. The early Christians celebrated the Eucharist amidst persecution. The desert monks sought silence, but not to escape the world; it was to learn to remain in God even when the world screamed inside them.
And we notice this in ourselves too. When we try to solve everything before praying, we don’t pray. But when we pray even without an answer, something adjusts and calms down inside. The unease we feel doesn’t disappear. But it changes places.
Perhaps the Peace that Jesus promises is not the end of fear. Perhaps it is the certainty that we are not alone in the storm. His Peace is in Him, and He LIVES in us.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
I confess that many times I seek a peace that depends on control, quick answers, visible security.
But today I want Your Peace.
The one that remains when it still hurts.
The one that sustains when I don’t understand.Teach me to rest in You, even with an uneasy heart.
Even tired.
Even imperfect.Stay with me, Lord Jesus.
Your presence is enough for me.
Amen.
Action of the day:
Today, try something simple, almost imperfect:
- Before organizing the day, give your heart. No need for beautiful words.
- When anxiety returns (and it will), repeat slowly: “Lord, Your peace does not depend on that.”
- Allow yourself small silences. Not to think more, but to remember in Whom you trust.
The peace of Christ grows in humble grounds. It does not demand perfection. Just presence.
