Devotional How to Overcome Spiritual Discouragement

Devotional of the Day

“Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, who is the salvation of my life and my God.”

(Psalms 42:11 – ARC)

What the Word tells us

The psalmist opens his heart sincerely. He does not hide his discouragement, he does not disguise his sadness. On the contrary, he acknowledges: “my soul is downcast.” And perhaps, upon reading this, we also recognize ourselves in that same condition.

The most interesting thing is that the psalmist talks to himself. He questions his own soul and, at the same time, points a direction: “hope in God”. It is not a denial of pain, but a decision not to remain in it.

Here we already find an important key: spiritual discouragement is not overcome by ignoring what we feel, but by redirecting the heart to God, even when everything inside us seems heavy.

What God tells us today

How many times have we felt this way? Without strength to pray, without the will to continue, with weakened faith. Spiritual discouragement does not come in a loud way; it settles in gradually, silently.

We begin to lose our taste for the things of God, prayer becomes dry, the Word seems distant. And, when we realize it, we are already living a tired, almost automatic faith.

But the psalm teaches us something profound: we are not prisoners of our feelings. We can talk to our soul. We can remember God’s promises. We can choose to wait, even without feeling.

Saint Teresa of Ávila said:

“Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, everything passes; God does not change.”

And perhaps that is exactly what we need to remember today: God has not changed, even if we are discouraged.

Prayer to overcome spiritual discouragement

Lord, I acknowledge that my soul often feels downcast.
There are days when I lack strength, when faith seems distant and my heart grows weary.
But today, even so, I choose to wait on You. Not because I feel it, but because I believe.
Not because it is easy, but because I know that You are faithful.
Renew my faith, Lord. Rekindle in me the desire to be with You.
Lift my soul, strengthen my spirit, and guide my steps.
May I never forget: You are my salvation in our Lord Jesus.
Amen.

Contemplation: Remaining in the presence of God

Now, take a small inner silence. Breathe deeply and repeat in your heart: “Hope in God.”

Do not try to solve everything now. Just remain. Even if you feel nothing,

God is present. Even in silence, He acts.

Discouragement loses strength when we decide to remain, even if in small steps.

Action of the day: A concrete step for today

Today, do something simple: take 5 minutes to be with God, even without that disposition or desire. Do it out of love.

Read again Psalms 42:11 and say softly: “I hope in You, Lord.”

“Why are you downcast, O my soul, and why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, who is the salvation of my life and my God.” (Psalms 42:11 – ARC)

Faithfulness in small steps is the way to overcome spiritual discouragement.

Resolutions

Spiritual discouragement is not the end of the journey; many times, it is an invitation to a deeper, more mature, and more genuine faith. If you are going through this, do not give up. Keep going. Even slowly. God walks with you.
